State College park officials order bigger pooper-scoopers.
Despite loud protests from State College dog owners, Tudek Park will now allow non-State College families to share the canine recreational facilities.
Brent and Katy Barto, co-chairs of the Tudek Dog Park membership committee, said allowing people from Philipsburg, Osceola Mills, and other GOMers (Go-Over-the-Mountainers) to use the park, will hopefully calm down these high-strung service industry workers. The move will also lessen the possibility that hootenannies and blue grass jamborees will break out in the town’s human-oriented parks and rec facilities.
“Apparently a couple of stray Philipsburgers were over at Sunset Park one evening with banjos and mouth harps,” Brent Barto said. “But they were lured away when a beer truck went by.”
So far, the inclusion of the hill people into the park has been peaceful.
“Oh, they come in and run around and play with their chew toys and sniff each other’s butts,” Katy Barto said. “They’ve been known to steal food from the dogs, so you have to watch that.”
But, not all those who live by–or who use–the dog park are happy with the move.
Gustave Lambortine, a dog owner who frequents the park with his pooch, El Cid, is trying to stop the inclusion of GOMers.
“I, at least, am able to train my dog, but these people are unable to stand the simplest commands,” Lambortine said. “Once, I told a young man to ’sit and stay’ and he presented his naked rear to me. This is an act of defiance among the hill people.”
George Burns Staple, who lives near the park, said he is concerned with property values.
“I’m all for being inclusive,” Staple said. “But I think of State College as a seperate, but inclusive place.”

“Separate, but inclusive” is right on. Finally DotPenn gets it right. Why can’t these GOMers build their own parks? No need to spoil our lifestyle with their presence.
