GOP Fears Gay Marriage Will Hurt Closet Candidate Pool

June 20th, 2008 · No Comments

Gay Marriage Republicans

GOP fears team-switching, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Republicans, reeling from a string of sex scandals, fear gay marriage may lessen its already-depleted candidate pool.

The party looks particularly vulnerable in states like California, which has opened its overly-ornate, antique Victorian-style gate to gay marriage.

Arnold Hassenflegger, a spokesperson for the California Republicans, said that there are signs the trend away from the GOP has already started. “Lately, I have noticed that party functions are not as well attended, or as well decorated,” Hassenflegger said. “Last year, we had a ‘Southern Belle’ mixer where we all came dressed as our favorite character from the antebellum south. This year we just sat around and watched Sports Center.”

“I felt ridiculous dressed as Scaralett O’Hara in that sports bar, by the way,” Hassenflegger added. “And not a single phone number, fiddle-dee-dee.”

GOP officials also fear their current candidates might bolt and openly embrace the Democratic lifestyle.

Lorne Greener, a GOP spokesperson, said the party has endured this before.

“We talk about it and we worry about it, sure,” Greener said “When they legalized medical marijuana, we had lots of candidates decide they were Libertarians who had problems with cataracts.”

GOP officials say the trend won’t last. Greener said he believes that once higher taxes hit, officials expect more closeted Republicans to switch back to the GOP. “We figure it’ll take about four years at the 50-plus percent tax bracket to change some minds,” Greener said.
